To make your Button Snowman Christmas Ornament, gather the following supplies:
- Chippy beadboard or similar surface (approximately 4 inches by 3 inches)
- 3 wood buttons in graduated sizes (e.g., 1 inch for the base)
- Cardboard scrapbook paper (for the hat)
- Black chalk paint (Waverly “Ink”)
- Brown paper floral wire (Hobby Lobby)
- Hot glue gun
- Cordless Drill (or stapler/glue for string attachment)
- Scrap fabric (for the scarf)
- Small green and red berry embellishments
- Lowercase and uppercase stamps (Hobby Lobby SKU# 911699 & SKU# 911677)
- Black Ink Pad
- Jute, ribbon, or fabric (for hanging string)
- Scissors
- Tweezers (for tiny embellishments)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Prepare the Base
- Use a chippy beadboard surface or a wood tag approximately 4 inches by 3 inches.
- Drill a hole at the top for the hanging string or staple/glue the string on the back
Build the Snowman
- Select 3 wood buttons in graduated sizes. Start with a 1-inch button for the base and smaller ones for the middle and head.
- Before gluing, arrange the buttons to form a snowman shape.
Create a Little Hat
- Freehand cut a small snowman hat from cardboard scrapbook paper.
- Paint the hat with black chalk paint and let it dry.
- Hot glue the hat to the top button (the snowman’s head).
Time to Add Arms
- Cut small pieces of brown floral wire and twist them to resemble wood branch arms.
- Use tweezers to position and hot glue the arms onto the sides of the middle button.
Attach the Scarf
- Cut a strip of scrap fabric to create the scarf.
- After that, fold the fabric strip in half, twist it, and glue it across the “neck” where the head and middle button meet.
- Fringe the edges of the fabric for added detail.
This is why I can’t seem to throw away any scraps haha!
Embellish with Greenery and Berries
- Add a small piece of green berry bush and a red berry to the top of the snowman near the hat or scarf.
- Secure them with hot glue.
Stamping the Design
- Use a combination of lowercase and uppercase stamps with black ink to add the phrase “Let it Snow.”
- Stamp “Let it” horizontally and “Snow” vertically on opposite sides of the ornament for added interest.
Finally, Attach the Hanging String
- Thread jute through the drilled hole or glue it to the back of the beadboard.
- Lastly, tie the ends into a loop to create the hanger, and get ready to hang this sweet ornament on your tree!
A Few Ideas For Customizing Your Button Snowman Christmas Ornament…
- Color Theme: Try a winter wonderland theme with neutral tones instead of red and green.
- Details: Cut a piece of toothpick and paint it orange for a little nose
- Materials: Use alternative embellishments like tiny pinecones or glitter accents for a unique look.
- Stamping: Experiment with different fonts or sayings for a personalized touch.
Displaying Your Button Snowman
In addition to hanging your finished Button Snowman Christmas Ornament on your tree, you can also attach it to a gift as a personalized tag, or display it on a festive wreath.
OR skip adding hanging string altogether & use in tiered tray or dough bowl arrangement!
However you choose to use it, this handmade ornament is sure to spread holiday cheer!
