Snowman Ornament made from Dollar Tree Birch Wood
To me, there is NOTHING BETTER than a budget-friendly DIY that doesn’t look cheapy!! I found these birch wood pieces at Dollar Tree & immediately knew I wanted to attempt some snowmen. I had seen bigger ones done as yard decor, but thought how adorable a mini would look as an ornament or sitter.
The quick video tutorial below will show the steps to create an ornament…..but I also made a variation during a Facebook Live with different embellishments! He was made as a simple sitter, & you can scroll to the bottom to see him!

Here are the SUPPLIES I used: (I’m including referral sources highlighted in BLUE for some of the products I used. Hope that helps ya!)
- Birch Wood Slices…. (Dollar Tree…..you could get 2-3 snowmen out of each package depending on the sizes in your package)
- Hot Glue Gun (Walmart)
- Copper Colored Wiring about 18gauge (Hobby Lobby or see this one on Amazon- Copper Wiring)
- Wood Buttons (Walmart)
- Cordless Drill, with 1/8in bit…. I used a drill bit just a bit bigger than my wire snowman arms, so depending on the wire you use, your bit size could vary
- Ripped Fabric (Hobby Lobby)
- Scissors
- Wire Cutters
- Copper Wire, you’ll need four 2.5in pieces & one 5in piece
- Ripped Fabric, you’ll need 1 piece about 1/2in wide, 8in long
- Wood Buttons, you’ll need 3 that are about 1/4in, 4 that are about 1in, 1 that is about 1.25-1.5in
- Birch Wood Pieces, you’ll need three pieces…..1 small, 1 medium, 1 large (sizes will vary due to packages not being identical)
HOW ADORABLE right??!! I just love that my 8yr old daughter contributed to this beautiful design with her Button Hat design!! GENIUS!! She insisted I give her credit here on the blog & the video! DONE lol!
The no face was by personal choice, but I do think these would be precious with a face!

I can’t pick a favorite, but this variation I made during this FACEBOOK LIVE turned out cute too!!! As another take, I dry brushed the birch with creamy chalk paint. I also made the snowman hat from cardboard & another piece of birch wood….then painted black. I painted black dots instead of using tiny buttons.
Off camera, I also made a cute little banner with jute string, canvas drop cloth & ink/rubber stamps!! I didn’t make him an ornament, so he’ll just be a cute little sitter….perfect for tiered trays & gatherings.
