Supplies I Used

Watch the quick tutorial video, and then scroll to read through the steps!

Simple How To

The first thing I did was give the figurine a solid coat of “Coffee Bean” chalk paint by Dixie Belle. I applied the dark brown paint first to even out the base coat because the ceramic piece was multi colored. You can skip this step, but I recommend a primer or an additional coat of the final paint color before antiquing.

Once the dark brown coat was dry, this is where the magic really happened! I applied the “Drop Cloth” paint, mixed with baking soda to create a really pretty pottery-like texture!

When you are mixing the baking soda/chalk paint, the consistency should be a bit thinner than toothpaste so you can paint on easily. If it’s too thick at first, simply add more paint to thin it out!

I did one coat of the “Drop Cloth” paint/baking soda mix, and the next step was to grab the “Dark Vintage” Krylon Antique Wax, and just brush it on, and wipe off. The goal was to get into all the crevices of the figurine and pick up on the paint/baking soda mix texture!

You can use this technique on any ceramic and metal items – just make sure to clean the items properly first. If painting glass or another type of slick surface you’ll need to apply a bonding primer before any coats of paint.
