Thrifty Easter Decor on Cutting Board with printed tissue paper
Here are the 3 MAIN REASONS I love a good Thrifty Makeover….Let me know if you agree!
- The PRICE….you just can’t beat thrifty prices and the cutting board I’m using for this project was only $1.55 Yippee!
- It’s UP-CYCLED….I’m not knocking buying new craft supplies, obviously I share lots of ideas with those…..but it’s really cool to know I’m keeping something out of the landfill and breathing new life into it!
- It’s truly UNIQUE…using something that not everyone can find means this creation is a bit more special and often one of a kind!
Now Cutting Boards like these are pretty easy to spot in a thrift store or buy new, so hope you’ll be inspired to get crafty with one yourself!
And a really unique part of the DIY is I show you how to Print on Tissue Paper to create custom decoupage paper!! You can use any art you’d like or Download the art I used on this one!

I hope you enjoyed the SHORT VIDEO TUTORIAL above…….Here are some STEPS to go along with that! Hope it helps ya out!
- First, I gave my cutting board a light sand and wiped it down with a damp cloth to remove any dirt/residue
- Next, I painted on a coat of cream colored chalk paint….color “Plaster”
- Once that coat was nearly dry, I dry brushed the chalk paint color “Truffle” in various spots to create some faux distressing
- And once that was all dry, I brushed a generous coat of mod podge over all the paint
- I wanted the mod podge to be nearly dry before I apply the decoupage tissue paper
- While that mod podge is drying, I grabbed a piece of 8.5X11 card stock
- I cut some regular white tissue paper to fit right over the card stock…..so around 8.5X11 as well
- I attached the tissue paper to the card stock using regular scotch tape..just use a small piece of tape on each edge to hold the tissue paper in place
- An extra step before taping is to place a piece of parchment paper over tissue paper and use an iron on low heat to get out any major wrinkles….you might can skip this step if your tissue paper is pretty flat.
- I loaded the card stock/tissue paper piece into my printer as I normally would. Please note all printers load differently, so be sure you load where the side with tissue paper will be printed on.
- Next, I pulled up this CROSS/Bunny/Chick Free Printable with transparent background onto my computer, resized to what I needed for my cutting board and sent it to print.
- Once done printing, I used scissors to cut tape holding tissue paper onto card stock.
- Then I laid the tissue paper over my mod podged cutting board…deciding exact placement before moving onto next step
- Next, I placed the parchment paper over the tissue paper and used iron to apply low/medium heat…rubbing for at least a minute so mod podge will reactivate and adhere the tissue paper to the cutting board
- Once I did that long enough, I used my mini gator sander to score the edges and release excess tissue paper
- I wanted a more distressed look, so I continued using my sander along edges of cutting board and edges of tissue paper. Even though the tissue paper looked pretty transparent, this distressing helps feather it into paint finish
- I then decided to add a bit more of the brown “Truffle” paint in some places…..I wanted a more dramatic effect
- Once I had achieved my desired look and brown paint was dry, I applied a full coat of mod podge to seal.
- MISHAP …..you’ll see this in video & I wanted to share this again in case you run into same issue….. after applying the mod podge and applying a little blow dryer to design, some red/pink ink began to bleed through on the cross. I did have a little panic, but Baby Wipes to the rescue lol….I grabbed a baby wipe & wiped right over cross…..it worked like a charm removing that bleed through.
- Once that was all dry, I decided to use the extra brown paint+water from my mister bottle and stain the back of cutting board…..I will probably do a design so this cute piece can be reversible, but I just wanted the back to look finished for now! To use paint as stain, simply mist the surface, paint on coat of brown paint, mist again & then wipe back with baby wipe or paper towel.
- Lastly, I knew I wanted a cute embellishment near the handle of cutting board, so cue a Precious & Simple Bow!
- I used a piece of scrap burlap, ripped Osnaburg fabric, and raffia layered together…tied off with jute string and hot glued near the top left area of piece. It was the perfect final touch!
