DIY Merry Cherry Pie Ornament

I just think that all the faux foods/fake bakes are the cutest little pieces of decor! I wanted to give this idea my own unique spin by making one ornament sized!….and use a repurposed item as the pie tin.

I started playing around with some extra mason jar lids I had in my stash & FELL IN LOVE with the look!! These are also great as bowl fillers & tiered tray decor!! You can give each one its own personality, as the embellishment options are ENDLESS!

I’m including a Supply List, Steps & a short video tutorial to hopefully inspire you to give them a try!

Also, if you scroll to the bottom, you’ll see an Apple Pie on I did & another one with a faux whipped cream topping! SOOOOO CUTE!!

This post may contain referral links to products used. This means I may earn a small commission if you make a purchase at no additional cost to you. I only refer products I use & love

Here are the SUPPLIES I used:  (I’m including referral sources online for some of the products I used….they are highlighted in RED so click on those if you need a source. Hope that helps ya!)

  • Wide Mouth Mason Jar Lid/Sealer (you can use any type of jar lid that is deep enough for a bit of polyfil)
  • Polyfil Stuffing (you can also use repurposed pillow stuffing or cotton balls for same fluffy pie effect)
  • Osnaburg Cotton Fabric (Walmart or see it here on Amazon–Osnaburg Cotton)
  • Solid Red Fabric (Hobby Lobby)
  • Red Striped Ticking Fabric (Hobby Lobby)
  • Rub n’ Buff in Spanish Copper
  • Paint Brush for Rub n’ Buff or apply with finger (a little goes a long way)
  • Cinnamon
  • Mod Podge Matte (Dollar Tree)
  • Paint Brush for Mod Podge/Cinnamon
  • 2-ply Jute String
  • Alphabet Rubber Stamps (Hobby Lobby item#s 911677 & 911669)
  • Black Ink Pad (Hobby Lobby)
  • Wood Button (from my jar of buttons I got from Walmart)
  • Pencil for tracing
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Silicone Finger Protectors (Dollar Tree or see it here on Amazon–Finger Protectors)

Here are some STEPS to go along with the short video tutorial!

  1. First I glued together the Mason jar ring and sealer to create one piece
  2. Next, cut out a circle of red fabric about an inch wider than the lid.
  3. Drizzle hot glue in bottom of lid & push down some polyfil
  4. Next, begin hot gluing the red fabric circle over the entire lid, covering the polyfil.
  5. Leave a small opening for jute string to be glued inside.
  6. Trim excess red fabric
  7. Then glue in a loop of jute string to make it hang as an ornament.
  8. Then glue the red fabric all the way closed.
  9. Next, I brushed on a little rub n’ buff to dull the shine of the mason ring.
  10. After that has dried a few minutes, rip pieces of the osnaburg cotton to create pie lattice work
  11. I ended up having 3 pieces going horizontal & 3 pieces going vertical
  12. Then use hot glue to secure along edges of mason lid. I chose to weave my pieces as well…for a more authentic homemade pie look.
  13. Trim off excess onsaburg before moving on to the pie crust edges.
  14. Rip another longer piece of onsaburg (about 30-32in)
  15. Then glue along the edges like a pie crust….folding over each section & creating little pleats as you go
  16. To give it a touch of golden baked look, I brushed mod podge onto the crust edge & lattice crust.
  17. While mod podge was still wet, I brushed on cinnamon.
  18. Then go back over with more mod podge to help it stick.
  19. I used 3 small pieces of red striped fabric to create a shabby bow & glued it at the top right under the string.
  20. Next, I created a small rubber stamped “merry cherry” tag & glued it in center of bow
  21. Lastly, I glued on a small button for a finished look! (a rusty bell would be super cute too)
Here’s a side view of how cute the lid looks as a mini pie pan

If you need some other cute options for handmade Christmas ornaments, here are a few ideas! Cookie Sheet Ornaments, Wooden Present Coasters, Birch Snowman Ornament, Embroidery Hoop Ornaments

I did this one a little different to make it an apple pie look. I painted on the pie crust slits. I used the color “Raw Sienna” by Folk Art

I’m actually looking forward to trying the little pies in a different way, with a different crust on some little Dollar Tree dishes I found…….I’ll update this blog after I finish that project, so be sure to stay tuned ;) !

Thanks for stopping by the blog! Stay creative! Summer :)

You can use your imagination for what kind of pie this is lol. I made a faux whipped cream topping using a small piece of chunky yarn.
