Dollar Tree Love Sign Makeover
Making over this Dollar Tree Love Sign was so satisfying! A beautiful & budget-friendly addition to my Valentine’s Decor!
**Important to NOTE: I DID NOT find this sign in the holiday Valentine’s section at Dollar Tree….it was on the regular decor/craft aisle near the wreath forms, ribbons, rocks etc.

Now let’s go over the SIMPLE STEPS if you want to create one too!
Be sure to watch the Short Video Above if you want to see these Steps in action!
- First I used a Scraper to carefully remove the weath greenery & leftover glue
- Next, using the gator zip sander, I gave the whole sign a scuff sand
- Then wiped back dust with a baby wipe
- After that dried, I applied a full coat of antique wax with a baby wipe and removed excess wax to it had my desired look
- I set that to the side to dry and then applied the same antique wax all over the bigger of the 2 hearts….wipe back excess…this will achieve a stained look
- For extra depth & character, I took a bit of the black acrylic paint to the edges of the heart
- After setting the bigger heart onto sign, before glueing….. I realized you could see a mark left from under the green wreath, so I distressed even more with my gator sander and sanded in a couple more spots to give it a cohesive look…I really ended up liking this extra distressing
- After the bigger heart was done drying, I used hot glue to attach it onto LOVE sign where the green wreath used to be
A sweet friend & follower gifted me with a variety of partial hymn sheets & I have enjoyed using them on several different projects
- Next, I traced the smaller heart over the area I wanted to feature from my “God so Loved the World” vintage hymnal
- I then used scissors to cut out the heart shape from the hymnal
- To prepare to smaller heart for decoupage, I painted it with a coat of black paint…reason being that there were words on the other side of hymnal and the black paint will keep them from showing through
- Once black paint was dry, I decoupaged the smaller heart by applying a coat of mod podge over the entire surface and placed down the hymnal heart paper
- I used my handy gator zip sander again to score those edges and remove any excess paper around edges
- Added another coat of mod podge to seal
- The hymnal had an aged look already, it wasn’t quite aged enough to match the project vibe….so I applied antique wax and black paint to edges of the heart
- Once dry, I hot glued the smaller heart on top of the bigger heart
- For embellishments, I used a light duty stapler with 1/4in staple to attach a few green berry sprigs
- Using my little bow jig, I made a simple fabric bow out of Osnaburg
- Then hot glued it on top of the greenery
- I left the jute string that came on sign in case I decide to hang….If I don’t hang, I’ll tape it down on the back
Even though the Steps on this one are Simple….it’s quite a dramatic difference & I’m so happy with it!
Don’t you think this one is neutral enough to be used all year long?!
And of course the messaging is quite meaningful….”For God so Loved the World that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” John 3:16
Be Blessed by this project, friend! Thanks for visiting the blog!
