Simple Fabric Organization BEFORE

Okay, the story is even though I don’t sew, I managed to collect all this fabric haha! And it ended up being shoved in a plastic bin…it was a MESS!

I could not tell what fabrics I had or if I was low on my favorite fabrics….it HAD to change!

Maybe you’re asking why I have so much fabric if I don’t sew? It’s mostly for no-sew projects LIKE THIS and bows LIKE THIS!

Simple Fabric Organization BEFORE

I’m currently in the thick of reorganizing my entire home craft studio, but I’m taking it one small space at a time!

I shifted some furniture pieces around & knew this handmade thrifted cabinet/hutch I recently scored would be PERFECT to store my fabrics!

After measuring the inside, I ordered 100 count of 10 7/8x14in MAGAZINE BACKING BOARDS. You can get different sizes if your fabric collection is smaller or you’re storing in a smaller space.

You could also use styrofoam or comic book boards for a similar concept. Your local fabric store might even allow you to repurpose their empty cardboard fabric bolts.

The CONS

When I first opened the package, I was actually disappointed….they were only slightly thicker than a nice poster board.

I honestly thought they would be more stiff like cardboard after reading some online reviews.

But I pressed on and started folding and wrapping my fabrics around each board and securing with a safety pin.

I discovered that you’ll have to have a good bit of the fabrics together so they’ll stand upright as well, but that’s not a problem for me haha.

Another option is to stack them instead & that wouldn’t be a problem at all.

The PROS

I found after actually starting to use them that because they are thin, not as much space wasted!

I was able to fit much more in my cabinet because of this.

PLUS, they are all cut to the same neat size and I believe that makes it look so much nicer.

Certainly would not have been so uniformed looking if I tried to cut cardboard or poster board to save a little money.

SHOUTOUT to Rusty!

He was the BEST helper & he was so supportive by laying all over my fabric pile while I was trying to sort everything. Just don’t think I could have done it without his help haha.

AFTER Simple Fabric Organization Ideas

Went with the classic ROYGBIV Rainbow Color sorting & I just LOVE it!

I found it easiest to just dig through my fabric, wrap each one, then sort into color stacks before placing in the cabinet!

Looks like I have extra space…back to the FABRIC STORE I go! hehe

It really is so nice having a visual of every fabric I own. I plan to maybe add some smaller boards for pieces of fabric that aren’t quite big enought to wrap on this board size.

I’ll be sure to Update this post with any changes I make!
